PhotoRefractive Keratectomy or PRK is a laser eye surgery that helps to correct problems like astigmatism, farsightedness and moderate nearsightedness. Using a laser, the cornea is reshaped so that light focuses effectively on the retina for improving vision. The major difference of PRK with LASIK surgery is that the former does not use cutting laser or a knife for creating a flap in the cornea. Cornea’s surface has a thin layer that is removed and reshaped using PRK surgery for corrrecting the vision.
At a time, PRK surgery is carried out on one eye and it takes around ten minutes to complete. In comparison to LASIK, full vision takes longer to achieve with PRK surgery, which could be around three months. However, patients can get back to work after 48 hours generally after the surgery.
